We are delighted to participate in the American Association of Private Railcar Owners (AAPRCO) all private car train through the scenic Northeast during the height of the fall foliage season. Please make plans to join us on this fabulous scenic eleven day adventure.
DAY 1 - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 23, 2021
8:30PM (Approx): Amtrak train #48, The Lake Shore Limited (with our private railcars Frank Thomson and Berlin) is repositioned from Amtrak’s 14th St. coach yard, to Chicago Union Station, 225 S. Canal St. Chicago, IL 60606
8:30PM: (Approx): Guests should already be at the beautiful and bustling Chicago Union Station, 225 S. Canal St. Chicago, IL 60606. Plan to congregate at the Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge at least one hour before our 9:30PM departure. The Lounge attendant will have your names as those who can gain entrance into the Metropolitan Lounge. A member of our staff will meet you there and escort you directly to our private cars when our train arrives in the station and is ready for boarding. Our private rail cars Frank Thomson (800110) and Berlin (800255) will be the last two cars coupled to the rear of today’s Chicago, IL departing Amtrak Lake Shore Limited Train #48. This will allow our passengers in the Frank Thomson to have a 180 degree panoramic view out the back of the train. After boarding, and following a review of the guest’s accommodations, amenities, and safety instructions, we invite all to enjoy a bon voyage toast of champagne or sparkling juice in Frank Thomson lounge.
9:30PM: Depart: Chicago on the Amtrak Lake Shore Limited Train #48. Let's enjoy the views from the back of the train while we toast to a fun and safe trip.
10:00PM: Relax as our train passes through the flatlands of Illinois and Inidana. Premium beverage and snack service continues in the Frank Thomson lounge until 12:00AM local time.
Evening: When you feel the time is right, you can retire to the comfort of your private bedroom and enjoy a good night's sleep. Overnight on-board the railcars as we travel through Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
DAY 2 - FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 24, 2021
6:30AM: Wake-up coffee and fine views are available in the Frank Thomson lounge.
7:00-9:30AM: (approx): Breakfast served on-board, en-route in the Frank Thomson lounge while we pass the historic Buffalo Terminal and proceed east through scenic upstate New York
12 Noon: (approx): Lunch served on-board en-route, in the Frank Thomson lounge.
Afternoon: Premium beverage and snack service continues in our lounge
2:50PM: (approx): Arrival in Albany-Rensselar, NY. Passengers can de board at this time to spend free time exploring Albany.
3:05PM - 6:0PM (approx): Passengers that remain must stay on board until our cars are switched to their final parking spot for the evening. During this time, access to and from the railcars will be restricted. Please plan accordingly.
Dinner: Dinner will be on your own at one of Albany's fine restaurants.
7:00PM: (approx): Once access to the railcars is granted, Premium beverage and snack service will be provided in the Frank Thomson lounge until 11:00PM.
Evening: Retire to the comfort of your private room for a restful nights' sleep as we will remain parked overnight in Albany. Sweet Dreams!
DAY 3 - SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2021
6:30AM: Wake-up coffee available in the Frank Thomson lounge. You can choose to get up early, or NOT !!
7:00-8:30AM: (approx): Continental Breakfast available In the Frank Thomson lounge.
9:00AM: Morning & Afternoon: Passengers are free to explore Albany, New York - the Capitol of the Empire State.
NOTE: Our 16 car special train will now be assembled and all individual railcars will be serviced. During this time period, access to the railcars will be restricted or not available, so both Lunch & Dinner will be on your own. Passenger Services will not be available during this time. Please plan accordingly!
7:00-8:00PM: (approx): Once access to the railcars is granted, Premium beverage and snack service will be provided in the Frank Thomson lounge until 11:00PM.
Evening: Retire to the comfort of your private room for a restful nights' sleep as we will remain parked overnight in Albany. Good night!
DAY 4 - SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 26, 2021
- Early Sunday, September 26th, the AAPRCO Autumn Explorer will depart Albany-Rensselaer as an Amtrak special train and travel north along the Hudson River to Whitehall, New York. We then proceed east into Vermont arriving in Rutland in the morning. At Rutland we will drop the Amtrak locomotives and operate south on the Vermont Rail System as their special train. Passengers on business cars can enjoy sitting on platforms and everyone can enjoy some fresh Vermont mountain air in open window vestibules. The fall colors should be in full bloom as we travel south all the way to North Bennington, Vermont. A photo run by will take place at the historic Rutland Railroad Depot built in 1880. Our train will then continue south to Hoosick Junction, NY. We will reverse direction and travel back to the scenic community of North Bennington, Vermont, where we will tie down overnight. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner will be served en-route. Premium beverage and snack service will continue until 11:00PM.
DAY 5 - MONDAY SEPTEMBER 27, 2021
- On Monday, September 27th, we depart North Bennington mid-morning and travel north through the scenic Vermont countryside passing through Manchester and Rutland. Passengers in business cars can again enjoy platform riding and open window vestibules as we travel north to Rutland, VT. We have added another route this year. At Rutland the locomotives will run around the train and we will proceed south on the Green Mountain Railroad to Bellows Falls, Vermont where we will tie up for the night. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner will be served en-route. Premium beverage and snack service will continue until 11:00PM.
DAY 6 - TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 28, 2021
-On Tuesday, September 28th, We depart Bellows Falls and travel north through the scenic Vermont countryside enjoying the fall colors and fresh mountain air. Breakfast and Lunch will be served en-route. We pass through Rutland, VT arriving at Burlington, VT our convention destination. We plan to arrive in the afternoon and will park in downtown Burlington within easy walking distance to hotels and restaurants.
Dinner: will be on your own at one of Burlington's many fine restaurants.
5:00PM - 7:00PM: Welcome Reception & Convention Registration (for Convention participants) at Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain - with Hors d'oerurves provided and Hotel cash bar.
8:00PM: Premium beverage and snack service will be provided in the Frank Thomson lounge until 11:00PM.
DAY 7 - WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 29, 2021
- On Wednesday, September 29th, the AAPRCO annual convention takes place with meetings and activities. COVID protocols if necessary will be in place including social distancing. Wake Up coffee will be available at 6:30AM. Breakfast will be served in the Frank Thomson lounge from 7:00AM to 9:000AM. Convention participants attend Convention activities, while others explore Burlington and surrounding attractions with Lunch and Dinner on their own at one of Burlington's many fine restaurants. Convention registration includes a Car Party. Premium beverage and snack service will begin after the Party concludes and continue until 11:00PM.
DAY 8 - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 30, 2021
- On Thursday, September 30th, the AAPRCO convention continues. Wake Up coffee will be available at 6:30AM. Breakfast will be served in the Frank Thomson lounge from 7:00AM to 9:000AM. Convention participants attend Convention activities, while others explore Burlington and surrounding attractions with Lunch and Dinner on their own. Convention registration includes a bon voyage cruise on the Ethan Allen Lake Champlain cruiser. Premium beverage and snack service will begin after the cruise and continue until 11:00PM.
DAY 9 - FRIDAY OCTOBER 1, 2021
- On Friday, October 1st, we will depart Burlington in the morning. Wake Up coffee will be available at 6:30AM. Breakfast will be served in the Frank Thomson lounge from 7:00AM to 9:000AM. Lunch will be served en route. In Rutland we will pick up the Amtrak locomotives and return to Albany-Rensselaer, New York, where the AAPRCO trip will terminate. Dinner will be available in the Frank Thomson lounge. Premium beverage and snack service will be provided from 7:00 to 11:00PM.
DAY 10 - SATURDAY OCTOBER 2, 2021
6:30AM: Wake-up coffee available in the Frank Thomson lounge. You can choose to get up early, or NOT !!
7:00-8:30AM: (approx): Breakfast served on board, en-route in the Frank Thomson lounge.
Morning & Afternoon: Passengers are free to explore Albany, New York with Lunch and Dinner on their own. While our special train is switched apart, there will be limited or no access to the railcars. Passenger Services will not be available during this time. Please plan accordingly!
No Later than 6:00PM: Passengers are to be back on the railcars in preparation for our 7:05PM departure. You don't want to be left behind!
7:05PM: Depart Albany-Rensselear, New York on the Amtrak Lake Shore LImited, Train #49. Our private rail cars Frank Thomson (800110) and Berlin (800255) will be the last two cars coupled to the rear of today’s Albany, NY departing Amtrak Lake Shore Limited Train #49. This will again allow our passengers in the Frank Thomson to enjoy the 180 degree panoramic view out the back of the train. Premium beverage and snack service will begin upon departure and continue until 11:00PM.
Evening: Retire to your bedroom & allow the rocking of the train to lull you to sleep.
DAY 11 - SUNDAY OCTOBER 3, 2021
6:30AM: Wake-up coffee available in the Frank Thomson lounge. You can choose to get up early, or simply stay in bed to experience the gentle rocking of a Pullman in motion as you watch the scenery go by.
7:00-8:30AM: (approx): Breakfast served on board, en-route in the Frank Thomson lounge while we pass thru Ohio & Indiana.
9:15AM: Passengers prepare for de-boarding prior to our arrival in Chicago. Luggage is ready and pre positioned for disembarking.
9:45AM: Arrive: Chicago Union Station, 225 S. Canal Street, Chicago, IL 60606. Upon arrival into Chicago Union Station, our on board staff will first remove luggage, then assist passengers to detrain to their pre-arranged ground transportation or hotel transfers. This marks the end of on board services. We give a big THANK YOU for riding with us!
Please Note: Usually within an hour or so of our arrival in Chicago Union Station, Frank Thomson (800110) and Berlin (800255) will be moved from Chicago Union Station with Amtrak train #4’s consist to Amtrak’s Chicago Coach yard, 1400 Lumber Street, for necessary post trip inspections and servicing. During this time, which usually takes several hours, there will be periods of no electricity, air conditioning and services and no way to get on/off the train. Please plan accordingly!
TRIP DETAILS AND FARES
Reservations are on a 'First Come - First Served" basis based on the date when a deposit is received. Our recent Passenger Survey showed that the AAPRCO American Autumn Explorer trip has the highest level of interest among all the trips listed in the survey.
NOTE: You must be an AAPRCO associate member or individual guest of a member to ride the special train. Convention registration ($345) is required to participate in the convention activities, which include a Welcome Reception, Convention sessions and Luncheon, Car Party, Tour of Vermont Rail System Shops, and Lake Champlain Bon Voyage Cruise.

This eleven day trip includes all rail transportation, meals en route and all overnight accommodations.
Fare does not include the required AAPRCO Associate Membership dues ($90) and/or Convention Registration Fees ($345/person).
Fare does not include any meals mentioned in the itinerary as on your own, & all personal spending.
NOTE: All proceeds go toward the restoration and maintenance of the Frank Thomson and Berllin rail cars.
TRAVEL TERMS AND CONDITIONS

TOUR PRICES: Tour prices are subject to change without notice, however Deep River Rail Ventures, LLC will make every effort to advise changes within a reasonable period of time.
ITINERARY CHANGES: Deep River Rail Ventures reserves the right to change train routing, substitute equipment, alter or modify the tour components if any unexpected and unforeseen conditions occur beyond our control. In the railroad industry last minute changes DO occur.
DEPOSITS AND FINAL PAYMENTS: If reservations are made more than 90 days before departure date, a non refundable $150 deposit is required to secure space. At 90 days before departure date, a 50% deposit of entire trip fare is required to secure space. The deposit payment(s) can be made by sending a personal or bank check and must reach Deep River Rail Ventures, LLC within 7 days after reserving. Final payment must be received by 30 days before departure date. If reservations are made less than 30 days before departure date, a 50% deposit of entire fare is required and must reach Deep River Rail Ventures, LLC by a time limit date to be arrangeure date: 100% refund is available minus the $150 non refundable deposit. 89 to 45 days before departure date: 50% refund of entire trip fare. 44 days to departure date: NO REFUND is available. If we have to cancel the trip, then we will provide you with a full refund of your deposit and payment(s). The two most likely causes of us having to cancel a trip would be a mechanical problem that could not be resolved in time for the trip, or a decision by any of the host railroads not to approve the planned travel itinerary.
TRAVEL INSURANCE IS ENCOURAGED: To protect investment in travel, Deep River Rail Ventures encourages and can arrange travel insurance at additional cost. Some bank cards also have a travel insurance provision which passengers should consult their card company for details. If travel insurance is desired, consult www.travelguard.com website. Then call them directly to get insurance coverage information that will be specific to you and your trip.
IRESPONSIBILITY AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: Deep River Rail Ventures assumes no responsibility for injury, sickness, loss, additional expenses, accidental delay or irregularities which may be caused through willful or negligent acts or omissions of the part of companies providing or engaging in transportation, accommodation of services related to the accomplishment of the tour. We have no control of the timing of our charter trains. Indeed passenger trains and charters do often run late quite often. Nor do we assume responsibility for natural disaster, social or political upheaval, acts of terrorism or acts of nature. We reserve the right to substitute hotels, tour leaders, equipment, motive power, trains, and routes.
RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE: Deep River Rail Ventures reserves the right to refuse service to anyone we deem necessary in order to insure that all of our clients will have the best possible tour.
PREDEPARTURE TOUR BULLETINS: Tour bulletins will be e-mailed or U.S. mailed to passengers who have reserved a specific tour as needed.
TICKETS AND BOARDING PASSES: Deep River Rail Ventures will either e-mail or U.S. mail tickets, documents, and boarding passes usually 10 days to 2 weeks before departure day. A set of instructions and expectations will also accompany these items.
ACCESSIBILITY: It must be understood that passengers should be able to walk and negotiate steps on their own or with some minor assistance from Deep River Rail Ventures attendants. Restored vintage railcars do not in some cases have complete handicap accessibility. Wheelchairs are not accessible. Red Cap service is available at some major stations.
ALTITUDE: Some Deep River Rail Ventures tours have time spent in higher altitudes. It is important that passengers know their limits and consult their physician to be sure altitude will not be a problem.
NO SMOKING: For the health and safety of our passengers and crew, smoking is not permitted anywhere on the railcar(s). This policy applies to all Amtrak trains. For those who must "light up", Amtrak provides occasional "Smoke Stops", where passengers can disembark to smoke.
